Joan Maynard Obituary: The Untold Journey
On June 26, 2023, in Kerrville, Texas, Joan (Joanne) Waychoff Maynard, age 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior. She d!ed at home, surrounded by her loving family and her loving husband of 59 years. Joan, the first child of Glen Abner and Goldie J. Waychoff, entered this world on November 23, 1933, in Long Beach, California. She was preceded in de@th by her younger brother Pieter Claesen Waychoff and her older siblings Nina May Freeman, John Eugene Freeman, and Goldie Martha Freeman.
Joan spent a large portion of her early youth in Troy, Montana, thus the town will always hold a special place in her heart. In 1935, when Joan was only two years old, her family made the journey. She remembered with fondness the times she and her brothers watched their older cousins play in the Bull River’s twisting waterways from the family’s little log house. She recalled cold winter mornings spent on the school bus with her older brother John holding her and wrapping her in his coat.
O’Brien Creek and the Kootenai River near Roosevelt Bridge were later home and playgrounds. In 1947, due to her father’s illness, she and her family relocated from Montana to California. She talked about missing Montana frequently for the remainder of her adult life.
Jennifer, and Stephenie, all daughters, were born to Joan and her husband in 1950. The breakup of her marriage in 1963 marked the beginning of a new period in her life. Family friend and dashing redhead Erie Joe (Rusty) Maynard became a stabilizing force for her and her daughters. In 1963, Rusty and Joan relocated to the Northwest with Rusty’s mom and the girls.
On October 26, 1963, they tied the knot at the Hitching Post in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Rusty often boasts that he has four wives at once. They finally ended themselves in Cheney, Washington. There, Rusty completed his education major. A wise and capable wife is more valuable than rubies (Proverbs 31:10-12). Her husband will be lucky to have her since she will make his life so much better. All the days of her life she only brings him good, never harm.
Despite the fact that Joan gave her life to Christ back in 1953. In 1965, a few weeks before Rusty gave his life to Christ, she experienced a rebirth of faith. Mark, Paula, and Matt were born during the next few years as Rusty took different teaching jobs in Washington and Oregon. They moved back to the Hill Country of Texas in 1974 when they joined a ministry called Red Sea Mission Team based in Kerrville.
While Rusty was away on fundraising trips for missionaries serving in the Middle East, Joan managed the household, took care of their three youngest children, and ran the home office. Missionaries, hitchhikers, and the homeless all benefited from Joan’s selfless hospitality. Joan and her husband Rusty have devoted their lives to ministry since Joan’s conversion in 1965.
Joan has given her all to her own family and the church. From 1981 until 1998, she and her husband led Church of the Hills in Ingram, Texas as pastor and wife.
Granny Jo and Papa Rusty, or Joan and Rusty, “retired” to Troy, Montana in 1998. Joan often reflected on the fact that it had taken her half a century to return to Montana, but that she had done so. But as the old adage goes, “pastor’s wives” never really retire.
She and Rusty kept working behind the scenes. Joan organized women’s bible studies, counseled, welcomed pastors and missionaries into her home, and loved the unlovable with the kind of kindness and mercy that can only come from God.

Proverbs 31:20 says, “She extends a helping hand to the poor and opens her arms to the needy.” Grandma Jo and Grandpa Rusty moved back to the Hill Country of Texas in 2021, where three of their six children now make their home. The next two are based in Texas, while the eldest stays put in her mom’s beloved Montana.

Her parents and brothers, as well as her grandson Andy Giesbrecht and great-granddaughter Destiny Tallmadge, all passed away before Joan was born.
