Nearly every first Tuesday of the month, Texas A&M University hosts Silver Taps. The ceremony, which begins in the evening, remembers the lives of recent graduate and undergraduate fatalities.
In order to pay tribute to, respect, and serve the memory of the victims, organizers also maintain contact with their families.
According to Grayson Sims, a member of the Traditions Council, “it’s something so vital that we still maintain the same honor, service, and respect as any other student.”
The students whose names are being recognized on February 7 are listed below.
- Nicholas James Brueckner, a junior finance major from Hockley, Texas, died June 17, 2022.
- Arjun M. Kumar, a senior university studies, mathematics for business major from Sugar Land, Texas, died on Dec. 5, 2022.
- A. Drake Rowlands, a junior economics major from Kerrville, Texas, died on Dec. 18, 2022.
Tanner Hoang, who passed away in Austin in December, was one famous former Texas A&M student who was not included in the list. Hoang, who was 22 years old at the time of his death, had been missing since December 16 and was found on December 24 near Austin after going more than a week without being seen.
Grayson Sims Explained Why Tanner Hoang’s Name Was Not Included
Sims explained to KAGS that Tanner had really been unenrolled at the time of his death, which meant he didn’t satisfy the criteria for the ceremony when Hoang was questioned about why Hoang was omitted from the list of students being recognized at Silver Taps.
Sims explained that at the time of his death, according to the academic records, he was not currently enrolled. “Silver Taps is for students, undergrad or grad, who are currently enrolled at A&M,” she added.
Sims clarified that they intend to pay tribute to Hoang’s memory at the upcoming Aggie Muster event, which is scheduled for April.
