13 Members to Special Committee on Firearm Safety

A new House committee will handle every proposed legislation concerning guns and firearm safety during the legislative session in Texas.

There are 13 legislators from different regions of Texas on the House Select Committee on Community Safety. The Robb Elementary Shooting Investigation Committee, established in June at Gov. Greg Abbott’s request, formerly included two members.

According to a news release, some members represent localities recently affected by mass shootings. The select committee included all House Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee members.

“While there are many factors related to this wide-ranging issue that our chamber will discuss during the legislative session, such as mental health, social media and school safety, a necessary component to this conversation will be related to firearm safety,” House Speaker Dade Phelan said in the release. “I trust that the members of this committee will properly scrutinise the legislation that comes before them, directing our chamber on a healthy and much-needed discourse this legislative session.”

Bills related to the possession, use, sale, and transfer of firearms and ammunition will be referred to the select committee alongside statements about gun-related criminal offenses. As of March 6, the committee did not have any meetings scheduled.
