Tim McCarver Early Career
Tim McCarver received interest from major-league organizations before he even graduated high school as a result of his rapid ascent to the position of a star player on the high school baseball team he played for. It didn’t take long for it to become abundantly evident that the catcher who was 6 feet and 0 inches tall had a bright future ahead of him.
Right after he graduated high school, McCarver was given a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1959, when he was just 17 years old, he made his debut in Major League Baseball with the Cardinals. After making it into the starting lineup as a catcher in 1963, he was never sent back down to the minor leagues again.
In 1966, McCarver had a batting average of.274 with a slash line of.319/.424 and 68 runs batted in. In the same season, he was selected for the National League All-Star team and made history by being the first catcher in the history of the National League to lead the league in triples with 13 of his own.
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired McCarver in a trade prior to the start of the 1970 season. Around the middle of the 1970s, he played baseball for a few seasons for the Boston Red Sox.
In spite of this, McCarver finished his career with the Phillies in 1980, after having played for them previously. Until he called his quits in Major League Baseball, he had caught 121 perfect games during his career.
