A lady of color from Austin has brought the Mrs. Texas Plus crown back to the capital city for the very first time in the history of the pageant.
Christabel Nuez, a resident of Austin who is also an entrepreneur, was crowned Mrs. Texas Plus America 2023 on March 25 during the Miss Texas Plus America Pageant, which took place at the DoubleTree Greenway Plaza in Houston.
“Everything that I’ve been doing in my life with regards to self-discovery, self-love, and Latino representation, and then helping the community – a better way to elevate myself.” According to Nuez, “I am excited to inspire possibly the pageant queens of the following year and help them, you know, feel confident in the body that they are in and elevate themselves.”
Nuez claims that it was in East Austin, where she was born and raised, that she first developed her pride in Latino culture. She is a proud Latina entrepreneur who maintains her involvement in the community by serving as a mentor to both established businesswomen and those who are just starting out in the world of business.
She is a staunch supporter of the body-positive movement, and her goal is to demonstrate to others that attractiveness can be found in a variety of forms. Together with her husband and their dog, Ody, she enjoys gardening, hosting family activities, and going to the local farmer’s markets. She and her family make their home in South Austin.
The Miss Plus America Pageant is a faith-based organization that was established in 2002 with the mission of celebrating the essence of the full-figured woman and providing full-figured women with a channel through which they can seek recognition for their concerns. The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas will serve as Nuez’s platform for the rest of her life. This organization’s goal is to increase the number of active Hispanic women in public, corporate, and civic spheres. Together, they have the goal of highlighting the positive aspects of Hispanic culture as well as its ideals.
“With everything that I’ve done, it all kind of just wraps up into one nice little package,” she said. “If this is what it takes to get us on a larger scale with a crown and a sash, then I’m going to do it for the greater good of the community,” Nuez said. “And to elevate my community and people like myself, I was like, ‘If this is what it takes to get us on a larger scale with a crown and a sash, then I’m going to do it.”
As Nuez fights for the title of Mrs. Plus America, she is attempting to secure sponsorships for her campaign. Houston will play host to the national competition from July 17-23.
