Following the team’s season-ending defeat to West Virginia in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament, Texas Tech coach Mark Adams announced his resignation on Wednesday. Adams’ resignation was made public just three days after the school suspended him for reportedly making offensive and insensitive racist statements to a player during a coaching session.
Although the school found that the incident was not a pattern of behaviour, the incident “connected to his contacts with his players and staff” was the subject of the investigation.
“Following this inquiry, Texas Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt determined that the racially insensitive comment was unintentional and an isolated incident,” said a school statement. “Following the comment, Adams immediately apologized to the team.”
A Witten Warning For Addam
Adams received a written warning for his involvement with the player at first. He is also accused of spitting on a player earlier in the season. According to Jeff Goodman of Stadium, he denied doing so but said he “slobbered” on the guy during a game after visiting the doctor with a cough.
“My lifelong goal was to help and be a positive influence on my players, and to be a part of the Texas Tech men’s basketball team,” Adams said in his resignation. “However, both the University and I believe this incident has become a distraction for the Texas Tech men’s basketball team and the University, which I care about so deeply.”
The announcement of Adams’ resignation may draw a pool of intriguing candidates from which Hocutt can hire. Texas Tech has developed a prestigious basketball program. Paul Mills of Oral Roberts and Grant McCasland of North Texas are reportedly the school’s top targets, according to sources who spoke to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander.

While McCasland has twice guided the Mean Green to tournament bids since 2020 — and they are in position to do it again this year as a contender in Conference USA — Mills has guided ORU to two NCAA Tournament appearances in the last three seasons.
