This Sunday, April 16, the Alamo Metro Chorus (AMC) will perform for the Fredericksburg Music Club’s seventh of eight scheduled programs for the 2022-23 concert season. The program will feature barbershop-style harmony combined with high-energy choreography and colorful costuming.
First-come, first-served seating will begin at 2:30 p.m. for the concert at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, 1800 North Llano Street. The performance is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.
As a member of Sweet Adelines International, the world’s largest non-profit women’s musical organization, the San Antonio-based chorus comprises women of all ages from Central Texas who are united by their love of barbershop-style harmony, producing close songs and resonant chords.
Women from Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland, and Wales, under the direction of Ryan Heller, share their enthusiasm with 23,000 other members from around the world.
Honors
AMC, celebrating its 28th anniversary this month, has won nine regional championships and made 12 appearances in international competitions, finishing in the top ten twice. In addition to tying for first place in this year’s regional competition and winning first place in the AA mid-size chorus division, they have received international fourth-place medals for their entertainment package performed at the Harmony Classic Contest in Baltimore, Maryland.
The group keeps a busy schedule, performing at private, cultural, and community events such as Memorial Day ceremonies at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, Spurs, Stars, and Rampage games, The Blazing Gavels KLRN Auction, and the United Communities of SA Awards Banquet.
AMC, whose members include teachers, students, homemakers, executives, and retirees, also adopts a charity each year, with the Ronald McDonald House being the group’s choice for the past several years. The Ronald McDonald House provides housing and comfort to many families whose children are receiving medical treatment in San Antonio. The Film’s Director
For the past 17 years, Heller has directed the Pride of Portland Chorus, with whom he has won eight regional championships and numerous top-10 placements at Sweet Adelines International Competitions. He was named a Master Director 700 in 2013. Heller is the artistic director and conductor of Chorus Austin, with whom he received numerous awards, including the Austin Critic’s Table Award for Best Classical Performance in 2018 and the Chorus America Dale Warland Singers Commission Award in 2017.

Music director/conductor of the Southwest Washington Symphony and co-founder/conductor of Portland Vocal Consort and the Columbia Chorale of Oregon are among his previous positions. Chapman University and Portland State University awarded him bachelor’s and master’s degrees in conducting and vocal studies.
Sweeney Todd, Annie, Brigadoon, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Magic Flute, and La Cenerentola were among his West Coast productions as musical director/chorusmaster. He conducted the world premiere opera, The Canticle of the Black Madonna, in 2016.
He has performed or recorded with the Austin Symphony, Portland Opera, Rose City Chamber Orchestra, William Hall Master Chorale, Capella Romana, Astoria Music Festival, and Broadway Rose Theater Company. The Music Club
In addition to freewill offerings at the door, the April 16 performance is made possible by donations from Fredericksburg Music Club members. Membership cards for individuals or corporate sponsors interested in joining the Fredericksburg Music Club will be available at the door during the afternoon concert.
